President Zourabichvili Briefed on Coronavirus Prevention Measures in Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti

President Salome Zourabichvili met with local authorities of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region and was briefed on regional activities and prevention measures being implemented against the new Coronavirus. The President was interested in how the regional administration informs the community on the new Coronavirus.

Among the attendees of the meeting were the mayors and deputy mayors of eight regional municipalities.

Alexandre Motserelia, Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, briefed the President on regional infrastructure works. He also stated that despite the new Coronavirus, the work schedule of the regional administration remains the same, while kindergartens, schools, and public transportation systems are being disinfected and recommendations from official executives are taken into consideration. According to Governor Motserelia, there is no confirmed case of Coronavirus in the region. However, several Georgian citizens who returned from Italy and four Italian citizens in Mestia are in self-isolation. President Zourabichvili highlighted that there is no ground for panic with regard to the Coronavirus, but all recommendations should be followed. Respective measures are promptly taken by the state. “I want to express that responsibility and caution are required. Regulations, regardless of how tough they may be, should be taken into account. High civil responsibility is essential to prevent the spread of the virus,” said the President.

President Zourabichvili added that today, the acting Head of the Presidential Administration, has become a member of the Inter-Agency Coordination Council, and that she was up to date with the new Coronavirus situation since the first days of the outbreak. The President was also interested in cases of violence against women and prevention measures taken in the region.

On infrastructure, the Governor emphasized that the region is quite active. Several large projects are underway, including the construction of modern purifying buildings and the rehabilitation of more than 300 internal roads, adding that the renovation project of the Zugdidi Botanical Garden and a new chess school in Zugdidi have been inaugurated. A new 700-seat theater is also underway, as is the planned Zviad Gamsakhurdia Library at the Dadiani Palace, to provide young people with a space to demonstrate their abilities.
