Meeting within the framework of the “Together for Green Cities” project

A meeting was held at the Zugdidi Botanical Garden within the framework of the project “Together for Green Cities”. Four countries of the Black Sea region are involved in the project: Turkey, Georgia, Greece and Romania. The project lead organization is the Istanbul Planning Agency (IPA, Turkey), and the partner organizations are: Zugdidi Municipality (Georgia), Kalamaria Municipality (Greece), and Constanta Municipality (Romania).
In Zugdidi Municipality, with the support of the European Union's Black Sea Basin Program (INTERREG NEXT Black Sea Basin), an international project "Together for Green Cities" is being implemented, which aims to improve the ecological condition of the urban environment and promote sustainable development.
The main goal of the project is to reduce air, water and soil pollution, restore biodiversity and develop green spaces in urban environments. It is particularly important to address the environmental challenges of urbanized and industrial cities, for which underutilized land plots will be selected and transformed into green zones
The project is based on the concept of green infrastructure and includes the planning of natural and semi-natural spaces, the creation of ecosystem services, and the improvement of environmental quality. One of the important components of the project is the planning of a Peace Park in Zugdidi and the arrangement of its relevant infrastructure, which will contribute to improving the ecological condition of the city and creating a healthy and comfortable environment for the local population. In addition to infrastructure projects, the Green Cities initiative focuses on community engagement and awareness-raising.
Various educational and informational events are planned within the framework of the project, which aim to increase the awareness of the population in supporting environmental initiatives and adapting to climate change. The project duration is 2 years. Its implementation began on July 3, 2024 and will end on July 2, 2026.
The meeting held at the Botanical Garden was attended by the State Representative of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Davit Verava, Mayor of Zugdidi, Mamuka Tsokri, representatives of the Georgian Dream faction, and experts in the field.
