Mother Language Day
A Mother Language Monument was unveiled in recognition of Mother Language Day in public school of the village Rukhi of Zugdidi Municipality in the vicinity of boundary line;
Monument was opened by the State Representative - Alexander Motserelia and director of Rukhi Public School - Gogi Todua.
After opening ceremony in Rukhi Public School a concert was held in dedication of the day.
The celebration event was attended by Nino Vibliani, a Deputy of the State Representative of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Lasha Gvasalia, a deputy head of department of relations with of local-Self-Government bodies, some local government representatives, the clergy, school teachers and parents..
14 April has been celebrated in Georgia since 1990 as the Day of the Mother Language Day.
On April 14, 1978 students’ pubic mass demonstrations were launched against the change of state language record in the Constitution. According to the amendment, the status of Georgian language as a state language in the Republic of Georgia would be annulled. As a result of peaceful protest rally for restoring legitimacy of Georgian language as a mother language the government was obliged to make a compromising step and finally the Georgian language was declared as the state language.
In Recognition of this day, various activities have been planned to carry out throughout the week in all Municipalities of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti.
